The Mountain East Conference hired Ben Brownlee as the league's Associate Commissioner for Championships and Compliance on Wednesday.Brownlee enters the MEC after spending the last six years with the since-disbanded West Virginia Conference, most recently as the Associate Commissioner for Internal Affairs, where he was in charge of compliance-related duties for the league's 15 schools, helped manage internal operations for the conference and was the primary administrative contact for several conference championships.A native of Moundsville, Brownlee earned a bachelor's degree in communication from Bethany College in 2006. He was a four-year letter winner on the swim team and spent three years as a member of the school's Student Athlete Advisory Committee and earned a master's degree in higher education and student services in May 2011 from Abilene Christian University.nn
HERD FOOTBALL: Marshall sophomore punter Tyler Williams was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List on Wednesday.The award is presented annually to the player identified as the best punter in the nation. Williams was a semifinalist for the honor as a freshman last year, averaging a school record 45.19 yards per punt and placing 16 of his 43 punts within the 20-yard line.nn
YOUTH GOLF: Colin Bowles of Oceana continued his dominance of the Callaway Junior Tour Wednesday at Riverside Golf Club, claiming his fourth low round of the day honor along with the title in the 13-14 age division by firing a 2-under-par 68.Lindside's Ike Judy fired a 3-over-par 73 to win the 17-18 division, while Mark Wilcox shot a 1-over-par 71 to take home the title in the 15-16 division. Whitney Milhoan of Vienna turned in a final score of 84, winning the 10-14 age group along with low round honors on the girls side.nn
A-B BASKETBALL: Devin Colston, a 6-foot-1 shooting guard from Baltimore, will join the Alderson-Broaddus men's basketball program, head coach Greg Zimmerman announced Wednesday.Colston played his freshman year at Dundalk Community College in Baltimore and led the National Junior College Athletic Association with 27.1 points and 37.9 minutes per game. The Battlers reached the quarterfinals of the West Virginia Conference tournament last season and ended the campaign with a 20-9 overall mark.nn
WVU BASKETBALL: WVU women's coach Mike Carey announced Wednesday the hiring of Ken Griffin as an assistant coach on the Mountaineer staff.Griffin has coached in eight consecutive postseasons, having served as an assistant for South Carolina, UNC-Charlotte and most recently with North Carolina State from 2011-13. The Augusta, Ga., native graduated from Voorhees College in Denmark, S.C., with a degree in sociology-social work in 1994.
