Mountaineers shut out on All-Big 12 preseason team
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia University's football team didn't have a player selected to the Big 12 preseason team, chosen by media representatives who cover the league.It did, however, land one of the individual awards. Running back Charles Sims, a transfer from Houston, was named the conference's newcomer of the year.Sims will play as a graduate student this fall. He rushed for 851 yards and 11 touchdowns at Houston last year and caught 37 passes for 337 yards with three more scores. He was an All-Conference USA first-team pick in 2011 and on the second team in 2012. The other individual honors went to running back Lache Seastrunk of Baylor (preseason offensive player of the year) and defensive lineman Devonte Fields of TCU (preseason defensive player of the year).
Seastrunk burst onto the national scene over the final six games of 2012 when he averaged 138.5 yards in the span. He had 1,012 yards and seven touchdowns for the season and earned the Big 12 offensive newcomer of the year award. He was also the Holiday Bowl offensive most valuable player. The junior enters 2013 on a four-game streak of 100-yard rushing games.Fields is the only unanimous selection on the media preseason team. The 6-foot-4 sophomore was last season's Big 12 defensive freshman of the year and an All-Big 12 first-team pick after posting 53 tackles, including 34 solo stops. He had 181/2 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. Fields was named to numerous 2012 freshman All-America teams.TCU's Casey Pachall was named the team's quarterback, while Kansas State's John Hubert was the other running back.The media preseason Big 12 team poll will be released today. The annual Big 12 football media days will be in Dallas on July 22-23.
