Spencer's Rick Moore shot a 1-under-par 71 to register the low round of the day at the West Virginia Senior Series' stop at Brier Patch Golf Links on Wednesday.
Moore defeated Hurricane's Harold Payne by three shots and Charleston's Gary Cooper by four.
The Senior Series' next stop will come on Monday at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club.
MCDONALD SELECTED: South Charleston sophomore softball player Amanda McDonald was selected to play in the Queen of the Diamonds Showcase South at Winthrop Aug. 31-Sept. 1.
MU BASKETBALL: The men's basketball exhibition game between Marshall and Concord as been set for Oct. 29, Mountain Lions coach Kent McBride announced. McBride had announced the game last week via Twitter.
MEC VOLLEYBALL: The University of Charleston is picked third in the first Mountain East Conference preseason volleyball poll, behind Wheeling Jesuit and Fairmont State.
Shepherd, West Virginia Wesleyan and West Liberty follow, with Concord and West Virginia State tied for seventh. Urbana, Notre Dame College, Glenville State and Virginia-Wise round out the poll.
D&E PICKED SECOND: Davis & Elkins' women's soccer team has been picked second in its first season in Great Midwest Athletic Conference. League coaches voted, picking Trevecca Nazarene No. 1.
Alderson-Broaddus was third, Ohio Valley seventh and Salem International eighth in the eight-team league.
WVU SPORTS: West Virginia soccer forward Frances Silva has been nominated for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, a national honor that awards athletes who excel in four areas - classroom, character, community and competition.
Silva graduated in three years with a 3.97 grade-point average in journalism, and is pursuing a master's in sport management. She has been active in soccer clinics and has helped the women's soccer program raise more than $100,000 for breast cancer research. On the field, she led the Mountaineers with 11 goals and 24 points.
The WVU women's soccer team is ranked 19th in the Soccer America preseason poll. Big 12 rival Baylor, who won the league tournament after WVU won the regular season, is ranked 19th.
WVU has announced a Varsity Sports Flex Plan ticket package, featuring 10 tickets for $20 to one of the following sports: baseball, gymnastics, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and wrestling.
