Roundup: WVU quarterback Childress honored by Athlon

West Virginia University quarterback Ford Childress was named the Athlon Sports National freshman of the week Sunday.Making his first career start, the redshirt freshman completed 25 of 41 passes for 359 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the Mountaineers' 41-7 win Saturday over Georgia State.
  • The WVU coaching staff named its award winners for Sunday for outstanding performance in the win over Georgia State.
  • Daikiel Shorts was selected the offensive champion while Nick Kwiatkoski was the defensive champion. The special teams champion was Daryl Worley while offensive scout champion went to Elijah Wellman and defensive scout champion was Jewone Snow.

  • MU SOCCER: Trevor Starcher, a former Hurricane High School standout, scored a goal in the 46th minute and Marshall made it stand up for a 1-0 decision Sunday over the University of Indiana Purdue at Fort Wayne in the Qdoba Invitational men's soccer matchup at the Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in Huntington. Danny Sellitti earned the shutout for the Thundering Herd (1-4-1). IPFW fell to 0-5-1.
  • Kristine Culicerto scored the winning goal with just under two minutes in overtime as Marshall claimed a 1-0 victory over Liberty in a women's soccer matchup Sunday in Lynchburg, Va. Lizzie Kish turned in five saves to notch her fourth shutout for the Thundering Herd (4-2-1).

  • CLARIFICATION: Due to a clerical error, there are two winners in the Great Gazette NASCAR Race for last week's Federated Auto Parts 400 race in Richmond, Va.James Akers of Charleston guessed the first and second place finishers, Carl Edwards and Kurt Busch, for a total of nine points. Karen Edwards of Charleston was originally announced as the winner last week. Due to the error, Akers and Edwards both win $100 and will have a chance to win $400 in the season-ending contest.
