The Tigers and the Fighting Irish will advance to the state tournament next week.Greenbrier East defeated Capital 3-1 in the Class AAA Region 3 final at Woodrow Wilson. The Spartans and the Cougars advance to next week's state tournament in Charleston.
Spring Valley knocked off Cabell Midland 3-1 to be crowned champion of the Class AAA Region 4 tournament. The Timberwolves and the Knights will play in next week's state tournament. nn
UC MEN WIN: Xavier Humphrey and Denio Chirindja dropped 14 points apiece as the University of Charleston men's basketball team opened the season with a 73-68 overtime win over Slippery Rock Saturday in the Clarion Hotel Conference Challenge at Shepherdstown.
Denzel Douglas and Aleksander Kesic each added 10 points for the Golden Eagles, while Maurice Lewis-Briggs scored a game-high 18 points for the Rock.nn
UC WOMEN WIN: The University of Charleston women's basketball team used a second-half rally to pull away from Chowan 71-61 in the final game of the MEC/CIAA Classic Saturday in Institute.Chyress Lockhart scored a game-high 16 points and added eight assists and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles. Nichole Perry added 14 points for UC while Alisha Mobley led the way for the Hawks with 14 points.
STATE WOMEN WIN: Lexi Carson netted 40 points as the West Virginia State women's basketball team posted a 79-74 win over Johnson C. Smith Saturday at Fleming Hall in Institute.Jordan Brock also added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets (1-1). Deanna Downer paced Johnson C. Smith (0-2) with 23 points.nn
TECH MEN LOSE: Chris Cantino had 24 points and 17 rebounds as Pikeville cruised to a 101-72 win over WVU Tech Saturday in the BB&T Classic in Pikeville, Ky.The Tigers were in firm control of the game, leading 46-18 at halftime. WVU WRESTLING: West Virginia claimed several first-place finishes at the Mercyhurst Laker Open Saturday.Sophomore Jakob Scheffel got the victory in the 174-pound weight class, Colin Johnston claimed the title at 141 pounds, George Scheffel won the 157-pound division, Ross Renzi earned the 165-pound title, Jakob Scheffel won at 174 pounds, Mac Mancuso took the 184-pound title and Wayne Purnell won the heavyweight division.
