Sissonville's Jones captain of AA-A all-state girls soccer team

FAIRMONT, W.Va. - Sissonville ran away with the 2013 Class AA-A girls high school soccer state championship and, with it, four first-team all-state selections Wednesday from the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.Fairmont Senior came in just behind the Indians with three first-team picks, proving just how successful the Polar Bears' season was after losing to the eventual state champions.The first team saw three forwards who scored a combined 119 goals, a keeper who had 10 shutouts and powerful legs from midfielders and defenders who worked hard all season.Two of the forwards were from Sissonville, sophomores Madison Jones and Karli Pinkerton. Jones, who scored 40 goals and was the first-team captain, and Pinkerton, who netted 38 goals, led the Indians (22-0-3) to an undefeated season, making them one of only two teams in the state to do so (George Washington boys in AAA was the other). Sissonville won the state title, its first since 2002.Sophomore goalkeeper Brooke Reed was also a first-team pick for the Indians along with senior Mary Schmeck, who added 16 goals from her midfield position.As for Fairmont Senior, junior goalkeeper Kayla Delorenzo posted 251 saves and had 10 shutouts while allowing just 15 goals.
Other Polar Bears first-teamers are Ivey Nucilli and Maddie Stevenski. Nucilli scored 19 goals and added 12 assists while Stevenski's was known around the state for her lock-down defense.Other players on the first team were Charleston Catholic sophomore Caroline Dundervill, who tallied a Kanawha Valley-best 41 goals; midfielders Emily Knight (Lincoln, 22 goals and 10 assists) and Natalie Prater (Bridgeport); and defenders Summer Whipkey (Midland Trail), Jenna Alonge (Bridgeport) and Lillian Gandee (Herbert Hoover).North Marion came away with three selections on the second team - forward Madison Haught (18 goals, 12 assists), midfielder Cassady Rodriguez (16 goals, 22 assists) and defender Skylah Haught.Fairmont Senior forward Gabi Mascaro (27 goals, 14 assists) was also named to the second team along with Sophia Kinnard (Tyler Consolidated), Kristen Brinkley, Brooke Baker and Shyann Carr (PikeView), Mikayla Oliverio, captain Alexis Lindsay and Jacquelyn Wolfe (Bridgeport), Kaylee Welch (Grafton) and Courtney Strobel (Sissonville).Email Matt Welch at or follow on Twitter at MattWelch_TWV.
