Roundup: UC advances to MEC volleyball semifinals

The No. 3 seed University of Charleston volleyball team defeated 11th-seeded Notre Dame 25-7, 20-25, 25-19, 25-18 in the Mountain East Conference quarterfinals Thursday in Wheeling.The Golden Eagles were led by Katharine Furlong, who tallied 13 kills and 16 digs. Victoria Severo added 10 kills and Melissa Reyes contributed 22 assists.Charleston (22-8) advances to the semifinals and will face Fairmont State at 5 p.m. today.
  • Hannah Hinton has been named Assistant Commissioner of the Mountain East Conference, Commissioner Reid Amos announced Thursday.
  • Hinton graduated magna cum laude from the University of Cincinnati in 2007 and from the Boston University School of Law in 2010. Hinton spent the last year as tournament director for the Houston Tennis Association.

  • WVU SPORTS: Twelve members of the West Virginia football team have been named to the Big 12 Football All-Academic first and second teams, the conference announced Thursday.Justin Arndt, Trevor Demko, Johnathan DePalma, Patrick Eger, Curtis Feigt, Nicholas Kinder, Nathan Majnaric, Michael Molinari and Tyler Orlosky received first-team All-Academic honors. Michael Calicchio, Kristian Clay and Jarrod Harper were named to the second team.
  • The No. 7-ranked West Virginia women's soccer team earned its 12th straight National Soccer Coaches Association of America team academic award. The Mountaineers posted a team grade-point average of 3.40, second highest of the seven Big 12 Conference soccer teams honored with the award.
  • The WVU men's soccer team earned its sixth straight NSCAA team academic award for its team grade-point average. The Mountaineers are one of 269 soccer teams in all divisions to have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • The WVU rifle team ranks No. 3 for the third straight week in this week's College Rifle Coaches Association poll. WVU defeated Great American Rifle Conference opponent Navy 4678-4627 Saturday in Annapolis, Md.

  • HYCAT SWIMMING: HYCAT will host the November High School Invitational swim meet at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the University of Charleston natatorium. The meet is being hosted by South Charleston and is sanctioned by the WVSSAC.
