Roundup: Winter weather takes bite out of prep schedule

Several high school boys basketball teams in the Kanawha Valley delayed opening their season Tuesday night because of wintry weather.Poca at Nitro, Nicholas County at Herbert Hoover and Point Pleasant at St. Albans boys games were postponed because Kanawha County called off school. In Kanawha, when there is no school all extracurricular activities are also postponed. Putnam County and several other surrounding counties don't have sucha rule. Poca will visit Nitro at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 28 while the other games have yet to schedule make-up date.On the girls side, Herbert Hoover at Chapmanville was called off with no make-up date scheduled.

  • WVU SPORTS: The West Virginia University women's soccer team is ranked No. 12 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire College Rankings for the 2013 season. This is the highest ranking the program has received since placing seventh in 2007.
  • Freshman outside hitter Jordan Anderson of the WVU volleyball team received American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region honorable mention, making her the first Mountaineer since 1988 to earn regional recognition. She totaled 394 kills along with 256 digs on the season and recorded 11 double-doubles in 30 matches.
  • Andy Bevin of the WVU men's soccer team was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's All-Great Lakes Region second team Tuesday. Bevin led the Mountaineers and Mid-American Conference in goals (nine) and points (24) to go along with six assists on the season.

  • SC BOOSTERS: The next meeting of the South Charleston High School Athletic Boosters will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the SCHS library.
