Brooke, Tug Valley seeking third straight cheer championships
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A pair of squads will be looking to build on dynasties at the state cheerleading competition today at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Class AAA portion begins at 10 a.m., with Class A following and Class AA finishing out the day.
Each class consists of eight teams, with the winner and runner-up from each of the four regions having made the field.
Among those teams competing will be Class AAA power Brooke, which is seeking its third straight championship and its 14th since 1997.
The Bruins got by Logan for the title last year, and the Wildcats are back again after finishing second in Region 4 to Spring Valley. The Bruins posted the highest regional score in Class AAA, a 341.55 followed closely by the Timberwolves at 340.13.
The Kanawha Valley's lone representative is Riverside, which finished second to Woodrow Wilson in Region 3 with a score of 315.775. Also competing in Class AAA will be Jefferson, Wheeling Park and Buckhannon-Upshur.
Tug Valley is also looking for its third straight championship after winning the Class AA crown in 2011 and a Class A title last year. The Panthers also won a Class AA championship in 2009.
Tug posted the highest Class A regional mark at 346.1, placing them well ahead of Clay-Battelle (322.15), which had the second-best qualifying mark. Also competing in Class A will be South Harrison, Williamstown, Wheeling Central, Notre Dame, Man, and Wirt County.
Robert C. Byrd picked up its first cheerleading title last year, but was the runner-up in Region 2 this year, although that result could be a bit misleading.
That's because Region 2 champion Bridgeport posted the highest qualifying score across all three classes with a 352.85, while RCB's 340.1 was the second-highest in Class AA. Also competing in AA will be East Fairmont, Liberty-Raleigh, Scott, Fairmont Senior, Wyoming East and Tolsia.
Logan coach Michelle Akers will receive the Active Coaches Award given annually by the National Federation of State High School Associations. Nitro's Kathy Barr won the award in 2012.
