Brooke, Tug Valley seeking third straight cheer championships

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A pair of squads will be looking to build on dynasties at the state cheerleading competition today at the Charleston Civic Center. The Class AAA portion begins at 10 a.m., with Class A following and Class AA finishing out the day. Each class consists of eight teams, with the winner and runner-up from each of the four regions having made the field.Among those teams competing will be Class AAA power Brooke, which is seeking its third straight championship and its 14th since 1997.The Bruins got by Logan for the title last year, and the Wildcats are back again after finishing second in Region 4 to Spring Valley. The Bruins posted the highest regional score in Class AAA, a 341.55 followed closely by the Timberwolves at 340.13.The Kanawha Valley's lone representative is Riverside, which finished second to Woodrow Wilson in Region 3 with a score of 315.775. Tug Valley is also looking for its third straight championship after winning the Class AA crown in 2011 and a Class A title last year. The Panthers also won a Class AA championship in 2009.Tug posted the highest Class A regional mark at 346.1, placing them well ahead of Clay-Battelle (322.15), which had the second-best qualifying mark.
