Several Kanawha Valley prep basketball games set for tonight figure to be postponed because of weather conditions.Games involving Kanawha County teams likely won't be played after classes for today were called off on Monday evening.That includes the following boys games - George Washington at Winfield, Riverside at South Charleston, Princeton at Nitro, Woodrow Wilson at St. Albans and Capital at Spring Valley.Among those, only the Riverside at SC game (Jan. 13) and George Washington at Winfield (Feb. 8) had set makeup dates by Monday evening.
Also, two girls games are postponed tonight - Scott at Sissonville and Herbert Hoover at Chapmanville. nn
STATE WOMEN WIN: Lexy Carson poured in 30 points as the West Virginia State women's basketball team posted a 73-58 win Monday over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan in Institute.Asia Greenleaf contributed a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (8-4, 4-2 Mountain East Conference), while India Taste added 11 points. Allie Brown and Lauren Graham had 14 points apiece for the Bobcats (2-8, 0-6 MEC). nn
UC WOMEN LOSE: Glenville State broke open a close game with a 12-0 run midway through the second half on its way to a 90-78 win over Charleston at Eddie King Gymnasium.Ashleigh Fossett paced the Pioneers (11-1, 6-0 MEC) with 23 points, while Ginny Mills added 14. Chyress Lockhart recorded 17 points for the Golden Eagles (7-3, 3-3 MEC) and Tianni Kelly had 16 points. nn
MEC HONOREES: West Liberty's Seger Bonifant and Notre Dame College's Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson have been named Mountain East Conference men's basketball players of the week.Bonifant went 6 of 9 from behind the 3-point line to score 26 points for the Hilltoppers in a win over Concord. Figueroa-Jackson turned in a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Falcons handed Shepherd its first conference loss last week. Concord's Sissy Wagner and Notre Dame College's Martha Nagbe have been named the league's women's basketball players of the week.
Wagner made her return to the Concord lineup by scoring 21 points, including the game-winning three-point play with 12 seconds left, to lead the Mountain Lions to a win over West Liberty. Nagbe led the Falcons with 17 points including the game-winning three-pointer in a victory over Shepherd. nn
WVU BASKETBALL: West Virginia women's basketball senior center Asya Bussie has been named the WVU Varsity Sports Report athlete of the week.Bussie recorded her fourth double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds) this season to open Big 12 Conference play with a win at Kansas. She followed that performance with 13 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots at No. 11 Oklahoma State, again helping WVU come back from a deficit to win the game. nn
WVGA SCHEDULE: The West Virginia Golf Association has released its schedule for the upcoming season.The West Virginia Amateur Championship will once again be at The Greenbrier, moving from August to June 10-13. The West Virginia Open Championship date has also been moved, from June to July 21-25 at The Resort at Glade Springs.The new venue on the WVGA schedule is The Greenbrier Sporting Club's Snead Course, which will host the 2014 West Virginia Senior Four-Ball Championship in October.
