Prep roundup: Roberson leads Winfield girls past Hurricane
Haylea Roberson poured in 34 points to lead host Winfield past Hurricane 55-43 Wednesday in a Putnam County rivalry girls high school basketball matchup.Roberson nailed only two 3-pointers and 4 of 7 shots from the free-throw line, scoring mostly on slashing drives to the basket.No other player scored in double figures for the Generals (4-1), who only led 34-30 heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Redskins 21-13.Hurricane's Abby Watson, who was second in the Mountain State Athletic Conference in scoring at 22.4 points per game, netted just nine points but contributed 10 rebounds and six assists.
Taneisha Sturdavent turned in 16 points for the Redskins (3-3) while Kaylee Wooten tallied 14 behind four 3s and Hannah Thompson hauled down 10 boards.
CATHOLIC 62, MAN 27: Anna Whelan scored 19 points as Charleston Catholic cruised to a win at Man. Vida Imani added 18 points and Maddie Blaydes 11 for the Irish (5-1). For the Hillbillies, Hunter Harvey scored 12.
POCA 70, SCOTT 49: The Dots jumped out to an 18-7 first-quarter lead and rolled past the Skyhawks in Madison. Noah Frampton and Matt Chandler paced Poca (5-1) with 17 points apiece and Elijah Cuffee scored 15. Logan Webb's 13 points led the Skyhawks (5-4) and Eric May chipped in 10.
SISSONVILLE 62, CLAY 57: Blake Newhouse netted a team-high 18 points as the visiting Indians edged the Panthers. Chance Brown pitched in 13 points and Josh Rawson 12 for the Indians. Stephen Cole scored 20 and Storm Carver 10 for Clay.
MINGO CENTRAL 65, HERBERT HOOVER 46: Alex Lee scored 18 points as the visiting Miners handled the Huskies. Dalton Hatfield notched 17 points for Mingo Central and Malachi May chipped in 12. Noah Toops turnedin 19 points for Herbert Hoover and Tommy Parrish netted 16.
SHERMAN 69, MAN 68: Blake Brewer hit a layup with 10 seconds left and Cory Smith came up with a steal as the host Tide held off the Hillbillies. Cody Muncy (17 points), Cory Smith (16) and Brewer (12) all scored double-figures for the Tide (3-2). John Thomas Keffer led Man with a game-high 25 points and Daniel Buchanon sank 21.
