Area roundup: WVU's Silva selected by FC Kansas City in NWSL draft
WVU women's soccer forward Frances Silva was selected by FC Kansas City with the 19th overall pick in the 2014 National Women's Soccer League draft Friday in Philadelphia.The selection caps off an impressive year for Silva, who led the Big 12 in goals (15), assists (13) and points (43) and was named to the All-Big 12 first team. Silva is the second Mountaineer to advance to the league, as Bry McCarthy was assigned to the Western New York Flash last January.
The WVU tennis team dropped its spring opener to Akron 4-3 Friday at the Ridgeview Racquet Club in Morgantown. Freshmen Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole and sophomore Vivian Tsui all won their single's matches to lead the Mountaineers.
The West Virginia gymnastics team came up just short, falling to Maryland 193.675-193.500 Friday at the Comcast Center in Maryland. WVU senior Hope Sloanhoffer earned her first all-around win of the year, scoring 38.75, while freshman Nicolette Swoboda finished second with a 38.65 showing.
