MEC basketball: UC's Osborne gets coaching honor; Humphrey named to first team

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- First-year coach Dwaine Osborne helped the University of Charleston to a runner-up finish in the Mountain East Conference and a first-round by in this week's inaugural MEC tournament. That immediate success gave Osborne a share of the league's Coach of the Year honors, which were announced Tuesday.Osborne, who coached UC from a preseason sixth-place finish to second place in the 12-team league, led the Golden Eagles to an 18-8 record and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. He shared the award with West Liberty's Jim Crutchfield.Charleston senior Xavier Humphrey is one of eight players on the Mountain East all-conference first team. The 6-foot-6 Humphrey led UC in scoring (16.6 points per game), 3-pointers (71) and blocked shots (29).
Humphrey's teammate, sophomore big man Aleksander Kesic, was voted onto the league's second team. He averaged 14.9 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds in 26 games.West Virginia State senior Bo King also made the second team after leading the team in points (19.0 per game), 3-pointers (51) and steals (44).West Liberty's Cedric Harris won league Player of the Year honors and Fairmont State's Thomas Wimbush was named the MEC's Freshman of the Year.
