Girls regional roundup: Catholic tops Williamstown for state berth
Charleston Catholic rallied from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to slip past host Williamstown 54-49 in the Class A Region 4 girls basketball co-championship game Wednesday night, sending the Fighting Irish to next week's state tournament.Anna Whelan led the Irish (19-6), who avenged a 63-38 loss to the Yellowjackets in last year's regional co-final, with 16 points and Peyton Mullen and Caroline Dundervill each scored 10. Melissa Cieslewski led the Yellowjackets (16-8) with 20 points. Huntington 83, Winfield 42: Lacy Johnson sank 20 points as Huntington cruised past visiting Winfield to win the Class AAA Region 4 co-championship. Dazha Congleton and Ericka Budd added 15 points each for the Highlanders. Haylea Roberson powered the Generals (12-13) with 17 points and Karley Rogers scored 12.
Fayetteville 57, Sherman 51: Kendall Malay tossed in 14 points as visiting Fayetteville held off Sherman to win the Class A Region 3 co-championship. Maddie Pritt chipped in 12 points and Avina Sedlock added 11 for the Pirates (15-6). Kara Davis led the Tide (12-9) with 15 points and Jordan Lewis scored 14.
Pocahontas County 70, Notre Dame 43: Pocahontas County had four players score in double figures in a win over visiting Notre Dame in the Class A Region 2 co-championship. Melissa Murphy paced the Warriors (16-7) with 19 points and Tristin Day and Sarah Ryder each netted 18. Christina Snodgrass led the Irish (12-12) with 12 points.
