Area roundup: Saturday's Kansas-WVU game sold out

The West Virginia University men's home basketball game against Kansas set for Saturday is sold out, the university announced Wednesday.WVU and Kansas will tip at noon and will be televised nationally by ESPN. 
  • WVU wrestler Nathan Pennesi has been named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team. Pennesi, an engineering major, enters the Big 12 championships this weekend at 16-9 on the season.

  •  HERD BASEBALL: Marshall's series opener with at Carolina scheduled for this weekend has been altered due to potential inclement weather in the area. The Pirates and The will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon. Sunday's game is still scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

  •  WVU TECH: The WVU Tech athletic department has announced that men's basketball player Brandon Burgraff and softball player Emily Geldbach have been named the Golden Bear Star Performers of the Week.Burgraff scored 24 points, including 5 for 12 from 3-point range, in the Golden Bears' 95-80 loss to Lindenwood University-Belleville on Saturday. The Matewan native also received United States Collegiate Athletic Association second-team All-American honors Tuesday.Geldbach tallied seven hits and three runs as Tech dropped two games against University of Northwestern (Ohio).
  • WVU Tech women's basketball players Nia Nolan and Cheyanna Lusk earned USCAA All-America honors, the league announced Tuesday.
  •  Nolan, a junior guard, was named to the second team and averaged 17 points, five assists and two steals for the Golden Bears  and finished the season ranked second in the USCAA in 3-point shooting percentage.
    Lusk, a sophomore, ended the season averaging a team-high three steals and was second in scoring for the Golden Bears with 11 points per game.

  •  YOUTH CAMPS: The Cincinnati Reds Youth Baseball/Softball Instructional Camp will be coming to Hurricane High School on July 21-25. The camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-14 and will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The price for the week-long camp is $395 and a spot can be secured with $175 deposit.   •  CLARIFICATION: In a Wednesday story on WVU football it was stated that "Dana Holgorsen said his team's guard combo of Quinton Spain and Mark Glowinski "might be the nation's best" in a pre-spring practice press conference. What he specifically said: "We might have one of the better guard combinations in the country."
