Multifest returns to Charleston’s Haddad Riverfront Park this weekend.

Multifest, an annual event promoting cultural diversity, kicks off again on Friday at Haddad Riverfront Park in Charleston.

The free event, now in its 28th year, will run Friday through Sunday including several musical acts.

This year’s headlining acts include Charleston-based Santa Cruz Band and the Charleston All Star Review Band featuring blues artist Priscilla Price, a Charleston native. Blues artists Biscuit Miller & The Mix and R&B group The Manhattans will perform Saturday night.

On Sunday several gospel performers will perform during the day including Jason Clayborn and the Team and Apostle Ronnie “Diamond” Hoard, the former lead singer of The Ohio Players. Sunday night jazz musician Ronnie Laws will perform.

Multifest began in 1989 as an alternative to and protest of the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta. This will be the third year the festival will be held at Haddad Riverfront.

Dallas Staples, board president of the festival and former Charleston Police Chief, said the community looks forward to it every year. He said there will be several family-friendly activities for the city to enjoy.

“We just hope people come out and enjoy all the food and festivities that come along with Multifest,” Staples said.

Staples said the event is something to be proud of, and can educate people in the community.

“We are a diverse community and we belong as West Virginians. This is important to solidify that diversity in West Virginia,” Staples said.

Families plan reunions around the event every year, Staples said. The tradition started several years ago, with many families choosing to spend time together at the event annually.

“That tradition is continuing, and we look forward to having the 29th and 30th,” Staples said.
