W.Va. State Fair begins next week
The 93rd annual State Fair of West Virginia is set to begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at the State Fairgrounds in Fairlea, near Lewisburg. The 10-day event will feature top-name musical acts, free entertainment, livestock shows, carnival rides from Reithoffer’s Shows and, of course, fair food. An early bird special offers $1 admission from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 16. Other admission specials include First Energy’s Magic Monday on Aug. 14, Senior Citizen’s Day on Aug. 15 and Military Discount Day on Aug. 17. Final weekend of “Anything Goes”
The Charleston Light Opera Guild’s production of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” wraps up with performances on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre located on the corner of Tennessee and Roane Streets in Charleston. “Anything Goes” was first presented on Broadway in 1934 starring Ethel Merman. The 1936 screen version starred Merman and Bing Crosby. The show has been revived many times on Broadway and around the globe, and includes songs like “De-Lovely,” “Anything Goes” and “I Get a Kick Out of You.” Tickets are on sale online at charlestonlightoperaguild.org. “Dirty Dancing” screening at Taylor Books
WV Free, a reproductive health, rights and justice organization, will host a Streetfest and movie screening of “Dirty Dancing” on Thursday at Taylor Books beginning at 6 p.m. The movie, an American pop culture classic, is a 1987 romantic drama that’s heavy on dancing and stars Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the leading roles. It also includes an underlying plot that touches on the issue of dangerous, back-alley abortions. The screening is indoors, free and includes watermelon, popcorn and beverages. Taylor Books is located at 226 Capitol Street.
