A man deputies had been pursuing after he was reportedly driving erratically in the Cross Lanes area was killed when he crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle.
A Kanawha sheriff’s deputy was on patrol at about 7 p.m. Wednesday when he saw a green Chevrolet Camaro driving along Big Tyler Road in Cross Lanes maneuver into the turn lane to pass vehicles.
The sports car, driven by Travis Wade Camp, 30, of Nitro, then began weaving through traffic causing others on the road to swerve to avoid being hit, said Cpl. Brian Humphreys, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
The deputy tried to stop the vehicle near Point Harmony Elementary School, in the 5200 block of Big Tyler Road, but the driver refused. The deputy pursued the car along Big Tyler Road but called off the chase a few miles later in the 4800 block. The deputy reported that at one point the pursuit reached speeds up to 85 mph, Humphreys said.
The deputy continued along Big Tyler until he came to the scene of a crash near Klondike Road. The green Camaro collided head-on with a Honda Accord, Humphreys said.
The Honda rolled over an embankment and landed on its side. The Camaro remained on the road but was severely damaged. The car caught fire and the deputy rushed to it to free the occupants while residents in the area hurried to get a water hose out to the car. The deputy freed two passengers but could not pull the driver, Camp, out, Humphreys said.
Camp was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the office of the state Medical Examiner.
Tyler Mountain firefighters and Kanawha County medics responded. The passengers from the Camaro and the Honda’s driver, identified as Paula Holmes, 41, of Cross Lanes were taken to Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Hospital. Holmes, who had been traveling alone, remained under evaluation at the hospital late Thursday afternoon.
Big Tyler Road was shut down for several hours while a crash reconstruction team worked at the scene to gather evidence. The crash remains under investigation.
