The Charleston Catholic High School volleyball team won back-to-back Class A state championships in 2010 and 2011.
In 2014, the Irish have turned to a member of the Fairmont State Hall of Fame in search of another title.
Former West Virginia Conference player of the year Courtney Furgason will be announced today as the new coach at Charleston Catholic and she brings a wealth of experience as a player and coach.
“I’m elated to work with such a stellar program,” Furgason said. “I hope to only make it better. The girls have high standards and a great work ethic.”
The former Courtney Fochtman is three-time All-WVC Tournament selection, concluding her career at Fairmont State after winning league player of the year honors. Her career included being picked on the All-Atlantic Region team and as a first-team all-WVC player four times.
She moved to Florida upon graduating from Fairmont State in 1998 to compete in beach volleyball. She also helped the volleyball programs at Florida Southern and Florida Atlantic.
Furgason coached at Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, Fla. She went from there to start the volleyball program at West Boca Raton High School in 2004, being named coach of the year three times while finishing with a 135-59 record with the Bulls.
In 2010, the native of Shanksville, Pa., returned to West Virginia and married former Fairmont State quarterback Jarrod Furgason. She served as an assistant to coach Wes Hall at Martinsburg High School.
“My athletic director at Martinsburg (Greg Reed) was speaking with (Charleston Catholic AD) Bill Gillispie about volleyball and (Greg) gave him my name,” she said. “I was definitely interested, was interviewed and I guess I did well in my interview.”
Charleston Catholic returns nine of the 12 members of last season’s team that finished with a 33-22 record.
“They’re going to have high expectations for me,” Furgason said. “I’m used to those. I’ll do my best and my girls will do their best as well.”
She and her husband Jarrod, a former Falcons quarterback, are members of the Fairmont State Athletic Hall of Fame. Courtney Furgason (then Fochtman) was inducted in the class of 2005 and Jarrod Furgason was inducted as part of the class of 2012.
Furgason will offer the Charleston Catholic program stability, which it didn’t have last season. Lindsay Kuncher was named head coach before the season and resigned. Her replacement, Leisha Salyer, was named head coach on June 1 but resigned upon accepting a position at West Virginia State University. Last season, Kristen Call and Angelo Beblo served as co-coaches until Call — former marketing director for the West Virginia Power — accepted a position as senior director of marketing for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans minor league baseball franchise. Beblo will remain and serve as an assistant to Furgason.
