Prep roundup: Perfect game lifts Herbert Hoover past Clay County in softball

Herbert Hoover freshman Dellani Fix, making the first varsity start of her high school softball career, fired a perfect game to lead the Huskies to a 10-0 win in three innings Thursday against visiting Clay County.

Hoover (10-3) plated four runs in the first inning, five in the second and one in the third. The Huskies’ Ashleigh Tignor went 2 for 2 with a two-run home run while teammate McKenzie Edmonds went 2 for 3 with three RBI in the win.

Brooke Coleman took the loss for Clay County.

Riverside 11, Capital 1 — The Warriors (5-7) score in each inning of the four-inning, 10-run mercy home win.

Kendal Marshall knocked in a pair of runs for Riverside, while twin sisters Destinae and Cassady Schmidt scored two runs apiece.

For Capital, Taylor Greenlee had two hits, while Tahje Houston had an RBI.

Boyd County (Ky.) 9, Wayne 4 — Lora Thompson and Alex Meade each had two RBI to lead Boyd County (6-7) to the road win.

Houston Reeves had a 4-for-5 day at the plate with two doubles for the visiting Lions. Taylor Wheeler also had an RBI in the win.

For Wayne (7-4), Alli Maynard had a double and an RBI, while Tara Watts had an RBI.

Spring Valley 6, St. Albans 2 — The Red Dragons (6-8) committed nine errors in dropping a home contest to the Timberwolves.

Cassie Adkins led Spring Valley (9-3) with two hits, while Jade Spurlock and Taylor Scott each had RBI doubles.

For SA, Madi Chandler collected three hits, including a double, while Madi Marshall had two hits and an RBI.

In Thursday’s baseball action:

Huntington 9, Winfield 0 — The Highlanders (8-3) scored seven runs in the first innings and added single runs in the second and third innings in the easy road win.

Stephen Holland had three hits for Huntington, while Andrew Zban had a pair of doubles and two RBI. Ben Gibson added two singles for the Highlanders.

For Winfield (4-7), Brandon Wright was 2-for-3.

Sissonville 5, Clay County 1 — The Indians (8-5) plated four runs in the fifth inning in cruising to the home win.

Dominic Walker, Austin Casto and Zac Boggess had two hits each for Sissonville.

For Clay (3-6), Cooper Osborne had three hits and an RBI, while Chris Cole had two hits.

Herbert Hoover 13, Scott 2 — Junior Shaun Dotson smacked his fifth homer of the season to help lead the Huskies (9-1) at home.

Cody Bowen and Joel Ridenour had two hits and two RBI apiece for Hoover, while Scooter Farmer added a hit and two RBI.

For Scott (2-8), Alex Miller had a solo homer, while Dylan Brown collected two hits.

Riverside 9, Nicholas County 1 — Derrick Chestnut, Cameron Green and Trey Faber each had doubles and two RBI to lead the Warriors (7-3) at home.

The Warriors’ Sam Stone earned his second win of the season, allowing just one earned run with three strikeouts.

Senior Matt Dodrill plated the Grizzlies’ (3-4) only run on an RBI double in the final inning of the game.
