Nitro plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth to break open a close game and take an 11-1 five-inning high school baseball win over Capital Saturday at Ted Ellis Field in Chapmanville.
Matt Harrison went 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs for Nitro (10-1), which led just 3-1 before the fourth. The Wildcats’ Matt Jewell went 2 for 3 with a double and Andrew Stone and Dylan Slack rapped out two hits apiece. Tyler Barton, who tripled, gave up an unearned run on five singles with five strikeouts and no walks for the Wildcats. Seth Roadcap had two hits for the Cougars.
Charleston Catholic 15, Wheeling Central 10: Charleston Catholic amassed 20 hits and outlasted Wheeling Central at Steubenville, Ohio. Jordan Covelli went 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs and Connor Golden went 3 for 5 with a triple, double and three RBIs to lead the Irish (7-3). Nick Bakaitis went 3 for 4 for the Maroon Knights.
Steubenville Central Catholic 11, Charleston Catholic 4: Charleston Catholic gave up five runs in the second inning as it fell to host Steubenville Central Catholic. Connor Golden recorded a triple and two RBIs Jordan Covelli knocked in a run for the Irish (7-4). Buffalo sweeps Williamstown: Buffalo combined for 20 hits on the afternoon and swept a doubleheader at Williamstown 5-1 and 7-0. Blake Caplinger struck out seven in five innings and Brandon Buntura went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Buffalo in the first game. Jake Tracewell went 2 for 3 with a home run for the Yellowjackets. In the second game, Aaron Lewis allowed just two hits and struck out 12 in seven innings and John Fisher hit two home runs and drove in three runs for the Bison.
Wayne 6, Chapmanville 1: Mikey Perry struck out six and allowed just one run as Wayne handed host Chapmanville its first loss of the season. Luke Cassidy went 2 for 5 with an RBI and Nate Adkins, TJ Perry and Brad Sharp each drove in a run for the Pioneers. Brock Dalton went 2 for 4 for the Tigers (11-1, 5-1).
Doddridge sweeps Webster: Drew Lett worked 5 2/3 innings with 11 strikeouts to get the win in the opener and Lance Trent went 3 for 4 in the second game as host Doddridge County (2-7) earned a 7-5, 10-0 doubleheader sweep of Webster County (0-6).
Charleston Catholic 9, Madonna 8: Connor Golden went 5 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs as Catholic edged Madonna at Steubenville, Ohio. Sam McKown added two doubles and two RBIs and Thad Jameson drove in two runs for the Irish (6-3). Kaleb Baire went 3 for 5 and scored four runs for the Blue Dons (8-2).
Poca sweeps Tolsia: Tori Ward fanned six and fired a one-hit shutout as the host Dots blanked the Rebels 10-0 in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep. Ward also powered Poca in the opener, going 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs in a 9-1 win over Tolsia. Jasmine Luikart surrendered one run on two hits in the first game for the Dots (7-8) while Natalier Perkins rapped out two hits, including a triple, and knocked in three. In the second game, Sarah Fisher went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for Poca while Rachel Yates and Lindsey Triplett drove in two apiece. Jordan Priestly had the lone hit for Tolsia.
St. Albans 4, Nitro 1: Madi Marshall allowed just one run off four hits in seven innings as St. Albans won at home. Whitney Jones went 2 for 3 for the Red Dragons (7-9). Nicole Brown and Haley Miller both doubled for the Wildcats (6-9).
Musselman 2, Point Pleasant 1: Point Pleasant had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh but failed to push a run across as it fell to Musselman at Magnolia High School. Hailey Fisher and Ashley Bentley each went 1 for 2 with an RBI for the Applemen. Cammie Hesson drove in the only run for the Big Blacks (8-5).
Point Pleasant 2, Edison 0: Carissa Cochran struck out 13 en route to a two-hit shutout as Point Pleasant blanked Edison (Ohio) in New Martinsville.
