Point guard Tarik Phillip of Independence (Kan.) Community College has committed to West Virginia University and basketball coach Bob Huggins.
“I like the town and they put a big push on to get me,” Phillip said Sunday morning. “Also, it’s a great group of guys.”
Phillip averaged 18.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists and was named the MVP of the Jayhawk Conference.
Phillip said he chose the Mountaineers over Memphis, Kansas and LSU as well as some mid-major schools. Kansas reportedly made a late push and visited Phillip before he visited Morgantown this weekend.
Phillip said he will have three years of eligibility. He previously committed to South Carolina in 2012 but didn’t qualify academically.
Phillip is originally from Brooklyn.
“West Virginia is closer to home than the other schools,” Phillip said. “It feels like the right fit.”
