PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — The Island Belle sternwheeler will soon resume taking visitors to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park.
The park will open for the 2014 season on May 1.
Park superintendent Mark Baker tells the Parkersburg News and Sentinel that an annual pioneer camp re-enactment, Rendezvous on the River, will be held from May 7 to May 10. Re-enactors will demonstrate how early pioneers and settlers lived.
The park features a recreation of the mansion built by aristocrat Harman Blennerhassett, who settled on the island in the Ohio River in 1798. Blennerhassett was later accused of plotting with Aaron Burr to establish an empire in the Southwest and fled the island.
