Robert L. Carter Jr., 91, of Charleston, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, after a long illness.
He was a member of Elk Two Mile Holiness Church and Keystone Apostolic Church where he was the overseer of church for over 40 years as Trustee, Sunday school teacher, song leader and Secretary and Treasurer. He was in the Navy and served in World War II pacific theater aboard submarine "Seadog" running mission in the Sea of Japan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Carter and Myrtle Legg Carter; and wife of 70 years, Frances Harrah Carter who passed away February 17, 2013; four brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by sons, Ted Carter and wife, Rebecca, Kenneth Carter and the Rev. William Carter and wife, Dixie; daughters, Rebecca Smith and husband, Chipper, Priscilla Chewning and husband, Michael; sister, Pauline Vermillion of Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grand-children; and eight great-great-grandchildren; three special nephews, Frankie McBride, Ray McBride and Darrell McBride.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27 at Hafer Funeral Home Chapel with grandsons, the Rev. Joel Sites and the Rev Steven Arden, nephew, Robert Harrah, and son, the Rev. William Carter officiating. Burial will be in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney. Friends and family may call one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers at Hubbard Hospice House for taking such good care of their loved one.
