BLUEFIELD, W.Va. (AP) — A fire official says a train is the likely cause of six fires that broke out along Norfolk Southern Railway’s mainline in Mercer County.
Media outlets reported that the fires occurred Sunday afternoon along the tracks between Bluefield and Ingleside.
Firefighters from three area volunteer fire departments and the West Virginia Division of Forestry fought the fires.
Green Valley-Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department chief David Thompson told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that he believes a passing train ignited the fires.
Thompson says four fires were extinguished and two were under control.
