Alum Creek man faces DUI, domestic battery charges
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- An Alum Creek man was arrested this morning after allegedly beating his wife and taking off with the couple's two-year-old daughter.
Capt. Sean Crosier of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department said deputies were on their way to a home on Ballard Road in the Alum Creek area at about 6:15 a.m. to respond to a domestic violence complaint. Crosier said Amanda Belcher, 30, told 911 dispatchers she had been beaten by her husband, James Belcher, 41.
Before they could get to the house, James Belcher allegedly fled in a minivan with the couple's daughter, Crosier said. He said deputies saw the van speeding by and took up chase.
Deputies found the minivan abandoned a short distance away, Crosier said. He said James Belcher allegedly ran into the woods with the child, but quickly surrendered.
Belcher was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with a child in the car and domestic battery. He is awaiting arraignment in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
