Names in the games: WVU football, D2 golf regional, Gyorko
WVU football adds another Pitt transfer
West Virginia’s football team has added another Pitt transfer to its roster, this one a defensive back who will be immediately eligible.
He’s Cullen Christian, who spent three years at Pitt after transferring there following a true freshman season at Michigan in 2010. He was coached for a time at both schools by Tony Gibson, who is now the defensive coordinator at WVU. A 6-foot, 195-pounder from Pittsburgh, Christian has graduated from Pitt and thus will be eligible immediately.
Christian played in 11 games as a freshman cornerback at Michigan before transferring to Pitt. He sat out the 2011 season, played 12 games in 2012 for the Panthers (starting the first two), but then played in just the first two games last season as a backup free safety.
Christian will be the second former Pitt player on next season’s team, joining running back Rushel Shell, who sat out last fall as a transfer.
Edgewood CC to host Div. II golf regional
Sissonville’s Edgewood Country Club will host the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Championship on May 5-7, according to the Mountain East Conference.
The tournament is one of four combined regional events for the D2 championships. Three teams from the MEC and three league individuals qualified, including the University of Charleston’s team and former Greenbrier Classic participant Jess Ferrell of Fairmont State.
UC is the No. 3 seed of the Atlantic Region. West Liberty and Concord also made the cut. Individually, Notre Dame’s Brian Bir and Shepherd’s Joe Burkinshaw join Ferrell.
The top three teams and two individuals not on those teams advance to the national event May 19-23 in Allendale, Mich.
Padres place Gyorko on paternity list
The San Diego Padres on Monday placed second baseman Jedd Gyorko on the paternity list.
The Morgantown native and West Virginia University alumnus missed Monday night’s game in San Francisco and will possibly miss the entire three-game series.
Gyorko’s wife, Karley, was due with twin boys.
