CHARLESTON, W.Va. —The West Virginia State University women’s tennis team has been selected to participate in the 2014 NCAA Division II tournament. A total of 48 teams from around the country are invited to play for the national championship which will be determined in Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May 17.
The Yellow Jackets are seeded third in the seven team Atlantic Region, which is divided into two fields. They face sixth seeded Slippery Rock at 3 p.m. on Saturday in a first round match at Indiana University-Pa. with the winner advancing to Sunday’s noon final.
The winner of that match advances to the Sweet 16, which begins play May 14.
WVSU won the inaugural Mountain East Conference championship last fall with a 10-0 conference record and overall mark of 12-0. The Yellow Jackets are led by sophomore No. 1 Brittany Franco and seniors Andreea Slusarciuc and Cora Berna at second and third singles.
This is the seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament for the Yellow Jackets.
