Two charged in connection with abuse of elderly man
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- A Princeton couple face elder abuse charges after allegedly mistreating an 82-year-old man.
State Police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said troopers from the Princeton detachment went to Princeton Community Hospital on Tuesday to talk to an 82-year-old man who appeared to have been abused. Baylous said the man had severe injuries to his left ear, a black eye and busted lips.
Baylous said the man told troopers that his caregivers, David Small, 34, and Patina Hypes, 48, both of Princeton, had been beating him because he wet the bed.
Baylous said the man told troopers he had been beaten with spoons, cooking pans and belts, and was put in the shower afterwards and doused with cold water.
Smalls and Hypes were arrested and charged with abuse and neglect of an incapacitated adult and conspiracy, Baylous said. They were each in the Southern Regional Jail on Friday, with a $100,000 cash-only bond set for each.
