Rand residents won’t be needing to leave the community for essentials once a new Dollar General store is built in the coming months.
Tuesday morning, Kanawha County commissioners approved the closure of an alley in Rand to make way for the store, which is necessary for the Dollar General to have enough room to be built.
Greg Googer, who was representing Patton Development, the company building the store, said the store was “in contract.” He estimated the total investment will be about $1 million and will provide between seven and 10 new jobs.
“I’m trying to think of the last investment in that amount,” Commission President Kent Carper said of the development relative to Rand.
The closed thoroughfare in question is a grass-covered alley that runs from Athens Avenue to the Carver Career Center between Midland Drive and Cardinal Drive. The Dollar General will be built in that block.
“This is a grass alley -- it’s never been used,” County Engineer John Luoni said.
Because Rand is unincorporated, all the streets and alleys in the community are technically state roads, which require the county commission to approve their closure.
The closure was approved without any objection, and had previously been approved by the Kanawha County Planning Commission on April 9, also without any objection.
Patton Development is based in Greer, S.C., has bought and sold several properties in Kanawha and Putnam counties since 2012. The company is currently building a Dollar General in Huntington, and Kanawha County officials said Patton has been responsible for the construction of other Dollar General stores in the county.
Kanawha County Deputy Planning Director Colt Sandoro said he wasn’t sure of Patton’s construction timeline, but said the company had applied for a building permit one month ago.
“If it’s like the other stores they’ve built in the county, they’ll move pretty quick,” he said.
