MEC BASEBALL: W.Va. State’s Hall named league’s top freshman

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Retiring West Virginia State University baseball coach Cal Bailey wasn’t able to secure the coach of the year in his final season, but he manage to have the Mountain East Conference’s freshman of the year.

Former Riverside star pitcher Tyler Hall, who finished fourth in the MEC in earned run average, was awarded by being named the league’s top freshman.

Hall had 23 strikeouts and only five walks in 49 innings, securing a 7-2 record for the 26-14 Yellow Jackets.

State also two first team selections, with former South Charleston star Jack Hudson and former Hurricane standout Josh Falbo.

The Yellow Jackets had a total of five players picked for first and second team, including second-teamers Tyler Payne from Hurricane, Hall and Tyler Thompson. Charleston’s Corey Lakatos, a former Logan standout, was named to the second team.
