MEC BASEBALL: W.Va. State bats come alive in conference tourney win

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Former Hurricane star Noah Blackhurst had two hits and ex-high school teammate Josh Falbo struck out the side in the ninth inning as West Virginia State advanced in the Mountain East Conference Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Urbana (20-15).

Coach Cal Bailey’s Yellow Jackets (27-14) moves to today’s action in the double elimination tournament with a 7 p.m. game against Concord.

Former Nitro standout Andrew Pickering, former Cabell Midland player Trent Porter and former St. Albans standout Josh Kiser each knocked in runs for State.

Shepherd 15, West Liberty 3 —

Top-seeded Shepherd scored 10 runs in the first four innings after spotting the Hilltoppers (26-24) a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Designated hitter Ryan Messina went 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI to lead the Rams (38-10), who will face the loser of W.Va. State and Urbana at 3 p.m. today. West Liberty faces Notre Dame at 11 a.m. today.

Concord 14, Notre Dame 0 — Bret Blevins went 3-for-3 with four RBI and the Mountain Lions (37-14) scored nine runs in the first inning to take command against the Falcons (24-21).

Concord will face the State-Urbana winner at 7 p.m. today.
