MEC baseball: Late rally sends State past Concord
Urbana 12, Shepherd 7: Urbana pulled the first upset of the tournament Friday, scoring five runs in the first and fifth innings to beat nationally ranked Shepherd.
The Blue Knights (24-20) jumped on Shepherd starter Jamie Driver, scoring on four consecutive batters: a Roman Gammell double, a Bronson Marlett single, a Robert Tavone Jr. triple and a Jose Vargas sacrifice fly.
Urbana never trailed, though the Rams (38-11) did cut the margin to 6-4 and chased starter Billy Kosachook in the fourth. But the Knights’ five two-out runs in the fifth gave them a good cushion.
Notre Dame 8, West Liberty 7, 10 innings: Bryan Blondeaux singled in a run in the top of the 10th as the Falcons (24-22) survived two rallies to finally eliminate the Hilltoppers.
West Liberty (27-24) scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to wipe out a 5-1 deficit, then scored twice in the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Tim Mirandy doubled in one run with one out, then Taylor Snare singled in the tying run with two out.
Travis Smetana led Notre Dame, going 5 for 6 with two RBIs, while Mike Ferguson went 4 for 5. Six different West Liberty players knocked in runs, and John-Michael Brunner went 3 for 5.
