Hinton man shot by troopers after stabbing two

HINTON — A Hinton man was shot and killed by law enforcement early Saturday morning after police say he broke into his ex-wife's house and stabbed her and her boyfriend.

A West Virginia state trooper and a Summers County sheriff’s deputy responded to a domestic complaint from Mika Gumm, who told the officers that her ex-husband, Shane E. Gumm, had broken into her home and stabbed her boyfriend, Rick Cline, and proceeded to assault her, according to a news release from the State Police.

Mika Gumm had wounded Shane Gumm with a .22 caliber pistol before fleeing the house, the release says. Troopers found Gumm in the hallway of the house with a large hunting knife, the release says. They could hear cries for help coming from Cline, the release says, but could not get past Gumm to see him.

Gumm refused to drop the knife, according to the State Police, and made aggressive moves toward the officers, who then shot him.

Mika Gumm received injuries to a hand and her feet. Cline was flown to Charleston Area Medical Center with multiple stab wounds to his torso and ear. He is in critical condition.
