The West Virginia University rifle team had six members named to the College Rifle Coaches Association all-academic team.
Senior Chance Cover and juniors Meelis Kiisk and Thomas Kyanko each earned the honor for the third time. Senior Daniel Sojka and junior Maren Prediger were selected for the second time and redshirt freshman Jean-Pierre Lucas earned the honor for the first time. Coach Jon Hammond’s teams have earned 46 CRCA all-academic honors since his arrival in 2006.
AREA GOLF: CAMC’s Medical Rehabilitation Center will be holding the fifth annual Challenged Sports Golf Scramble at 1 p.m. Friday at Big Bend Golf Course. The scramble is open to the public and entry fees are $300 per team of four and $75 for individuals who will be placed on a team. The entry fee covers 18 holes of golf, cart, T-shirt, refreshments, meal and hole prizes. Sponsorship packages are also available. n Kanawha County Parks will be holding youth golf camps in June and July at the Chilton Golf Course in Coonskin Park and the Big Bend Golf Course.
The Birdies Golf Camps (ages 6-11) are held June 9-13, July 7-11 and July 28-Aug. 1. Each camp will be held at the Chilton Golf Course in Coonskin Park from 9 a.m. to noon and are limited to six students. Pre-registration is required and students must have clubs. The fee is $125. Cabell Midland 10, Spring Valley 8: Brady Elkins smashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to propel Cabell Midland past visiting Spring Valley in a Class AAA Region 4 Section 4 contest. Elkins finished with four RBIs and Taylor Kuhn, Tyler Hayes and Jacob Perry each drove in a run for the Knights. Sammy Brody and Dionte Coleman each had two RBIs for the Timberwolves.
Man 14, Tug Valley 0: Braden Griffin tossed a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 10 as the Hillbillies (16-10) captured the Class A Region 3 Section 4 title over the Panthers (5-13-1). John Thomas Keffer was 2 for 2 for Man, which got two RBIs each from Kenny Jo Adkins, Austin Cook, Derek Messer, Cayce Mullins, Cameron Simpson and Mikle Scott Rowe.
