Charleston police are looking at possible criminal charges after three toddlers were found wandering alone on the city’s West Side on Friday.

A passerby spotted three children, all under the age of 4, near J.E. Robins Elementary School on Beech Avenue on Friday morning, Charleston Police Lt. Steve Cooper said.

Police arrived and returned the children to the home, located at the corned of Beech Avenue and Garvin Streets. However city officials later showed up and deemed their home unfit because of a bug infestation and unsanitary conditions.

Cooper said no charges have been filed against the parents, but the case is under investigation. Child Protective Services is also investigating.
