The West Virginia Power allowed five runs in the third inning and fell to the Delmarva Shorebirds 11-4 Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park.
Delmarva’s Mike Yastrzemski belted a three-run homer and the Shorebirds scored two more runs on an error and an RBI single by Chance Sisco to take a 5-0 lead in the third. West Virginia cut into the lead in the fifth with on an RBI ground out from Candon Myles and an RBI single from JaCoby Jones.
The Shorebirds answered immediately with a solo home run by Sisco in the sixth inning. The Power’s Danny Collins drove in Reese McGuire in the eighth and Elvis Escobar smashed a solo home run in the ninth, but that would be all the scoring for West Virginia. McGuire extended his 10-game hitting streak with a double in the eighth.
Power starter Justin Topa (2-2) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. Delmarva’s Jon Keller (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three in three innings of relief.
West Virginia hosts the Shorebirds at 2:05 p.m. today. Dovydas Neverauskas will start for the Power against the Shorebirds’ Hunter Harvey.
