PREP SOFTBALL: Herbert Hoover wins first state championship; Buffalo claims fourth consecutive title



Herbert Hoover has won the school’s first softball state championship.

The Huskies defeated Ritchie County, 12-6, Thursday afternoon to capture the Class AA title at Jackson Park in Vienna. Hoover compiled a 3-0 record in the two-day, four-team event, defeated Petersburg 8-2 and Ritchie County twice on Thursday.

Hoover beat Ritchie County, 7-1, on Thursday morning to advance to the state title game. That game was continued from Wednesday night’s game, which was suspended because of heavy rain.

In Class A, Buffalo defeated Moorefield, 8-0, to capture the state championship Thursday afternoon in Vienna.

It is the fourth consecutive state title for the Bison.

Buffalo outscored its opponents 28-3 in three games of the tournament, which took place Wednesday and Thursday. Buffalo advanced to the winner’s bracket with a 14-3 win over Moorefield on Wednesday morning, and then had its game against Magnolia suspended Wednesday night because of inclement weather. That game resumed Thursday morning and Buffalo finished off Magnolia, 6-0, to advance to the championship game.
