SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. – Police are investigating a one-car crash at Summit Point Motorsports Park that killed a professional driving instructor.

Jefferson County authorities tell media outlets that the instructor was a passenger in a vehicle that ran off the track and hit a tree.

Sheriff Pete Dougherty says the instructor was giving a driving lesson when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The accident occurred Saturday afternoon during the track’s annual Hyperfest event.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Sell says amateur drivers are allowed to take their vehicles onto the track during Hyperfest with a National Auto Sport Association driver in the passenger seat.

Sell says the driver suffered non-life threating injuries.

The raceway declined to comment on the accident but said it is being investigated.
