Seth Kinker of Cabell Midland was named the Mountain State Athletic Conference baseball player of the year Monday while Alan Burns of Parkersburg earned coach of the year honors.
Class AAA state champion Hurricane had three players named to the all-conference first team including J.T. Rogoszewski, Austin Hensley and Trey Dawson. Cameron Norris of runner-up Riverside also landed first team accolades. (For MSAC teams, see Page 2B).
SA HONORS: The St. Albans High School Sports and Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2014 at 6 p.m. July 18 at the high school.
The inductees include Gene Brightwell (1954, football), Carl Garner (1957, football), Butch Powell (1964, basketball), Eddie Hereford (1965, track), Roger Childers (1968, football), Andy Spradling (1982, basketball), Rick Whitman (1992, baseball), Jason Rader (1999, football).
Dickie Campbell (1975, faculty member), Ed Carter (baseball coach) and Deb Austin Brown (Distinguished Alumnus) will also be honored.

ODP SOCCER: The West Virginia Soccer Association 1997 Boys Olympic Development Program team advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I ODP championships, marking the first time a West Virginia boys team has moved on to this round.
The team, coached by Bob Gray of the Marshall men’s soccer team, will face Vermont on June 21 in Delaware. The winner will face either New Jersey or Eastern Pennsylvania on June 22 in the championship match.
This past weekend at Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., the 1997s secured wins over New York West (1-0) and Virginia (1-0) as well as a scoreless draw with New York East to win the table. In 2011, the WVSA 1996 Girls ODP team advanced to the semifinals for the first time in state history.

JUNIOR GOLF: Evan Cuomo of Follansbee fired a 3-under par 67 to take home the low round of the day Monday at the Callaway Junior Tour at Lewisburg Elks Golf Club.
Cuomo also won the 13-14 age division. Travis Covert of Red House posted a 1-under 69 to claim the 17-18 age division and Zach Chapman of Culloden shot an even 70 to win the 15-16 age division. Sammy White of Hurricane won the 12 and under with a 77. Jackie Cunningham grabbed the girls low round along with the title in the 15-18 girls division.

5K RUN: The Ronceverte River Festival 5K run/walk and 1-mile walk will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday on Monroe Avenue in Ronceverte. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the cost is $25 for adults and $20 for children 18 and younger. For more information, visit www.rrf5k.webs.com.
