West Virginia State University Hall of Fame member Wendell Smith will be honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors with the Red Smith Award June 27 in Washington D.C., which would have been Smith’s 100th birthday.
His 92-year-old widow, Wyonella, will accept the award on behalf of Smith, who passed away in 1972.
Smith, a Detroit native, graduated from what was then West Virginia State College in 1937. He played baseball for the Yellow Jackets and was the sports editor for the school newspaper as a junior and senior.
He was the first black admitted into the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWA), the first black reporter for the Chicago Herald and was elected to the sportswriters’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. The previous year, he received the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, the highest award given by the BBWA.
