Roundup: Power losing streak reaches 13 games

Delmarva exploded for a combined 20 runs and 27 hits as the Shorebirds swept a doubleheader from the West Virginia Power, 6-4 and 12-5, Saturday at Appalachian Power Park, extending the Power’s losing streak to 13.

In the opener, Steven Brault (7-2) picked up the win for the Shorebirds (37-31), allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Cody Dickson (2-8) took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings.

Mike Yastrzemski turned in a 2 for 4 performance with home runs in the first and seventh innings to pace Delmarva. The Power (20-47) managed only six hits, with Wyatt Mathisen getting two.

In the nightcap, Power starter Dovydas Neverauskas (3-5) was shelled for eight runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings, his fourth straight loss. Edwin Espinal paced the Power offense, going 3 for 4 with a double.

The four-game series concludes today with an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 12:05 p.m.

WVSACA HONORS: The West Virginia Schools Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year award winners for 2014 were announced Saturday.

Bridgeport football coach Josh Nicewarner, Bluefield boys basketball coach Buster Large and Westside girls basketball coach Jamie Lusk headline this year’s list. Other award recipients include Huntington’s Joan Poole (tennis), Lincoln County’s Yancey Weaver (softball), Tucker County’s Amy Kyle (cheerleading), Man’s Larry Vance (baseball), Williamstown’s Zack Hall (girls track), Parkersburg’s Rod O’Donnell (boys track), Greenbrier East’s Matt Sauvage (volleyball) and Independence’s Cliff Warden (wrestling).

Coaches will be honored at halftime of the North/South Football Classic Saturday.

SPORTS CAMPS: The Winning Edge basketball camp will be held at Poca High School June 23-27 for boys and girls ages 8 to 14.
