Parkersburg police excessive force lawsuit settled

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – A Parkersburg man has settled his lawsuit alleging a city police officer used excessive force against him.

Parkersburg police chief Joe Martin tells media outlets that the city’s insurer agreed to pay $80,000 to John Michael Sadler Jr.

Sadler sued the city, Patrolmen Jay Hart and Michael Bosley, the police chief, the mayor and another officer identified only as John Doe in 2013. The lawsuit alleged that Hart chocked and punched Sadler on Aug. 13, 2013, while Sadler was handcuffed.

Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin dismissed all of the defendants except Hart from the lawsuit.

Martin says Hart is on administrative duty and disciplinary action is pending.

Attorneys for Sadler and Hart declined to comment on the case.
