The running of the dogs

Owners will unleash their wieners and wiener-wannabes for races, a fetch competition and costume contest at Saturday’s West Side Wiener Dog Race.

The popular FestivALL West Side Wiener Dog Race kicks off its eighth annual event at 10 a.m. Saturday on the lawn of Stonewall Jackson Middle School, 812 Park Ave. That’s when registration and live music start and the vendors, info booths, splash pools and cooling stations open. Competitions get underway at 11:30 a.m. when the fetch contest begins following a pet blessing. After that, there’s a canine costume contest and parade at noon, and the races start at 1 p.m. Awards will be given at 2:30 p.m., and the event concludes at 3 p.m. There’s no fee to attend, but registration (which includes one race plus the fetch and costume contests) is $10 per dog. Proceeds benefit the Kanawha Charleston Humane Association’s no-kill efforts. Visit
