Trooper injured in hit-and-run on Turnpike
ATHENS, W.Va. -- A State Police trooper who had gotten out of his car to clear debris from the West Virginia Turnpike was hit by a vehicle early Thursday morning, a State Police spokesman said.
Trooper First Class D.R. White had gotten out of his vehicle just past mile marker 15, near the Athens exit, in the northbound lanes of Interstate 77 when he was hit by a passing car, Lt. Michael Baylous said. The car did not stop.
Baylous said that he thought White was hit by the passing vehicle’s passenger side mirror.
White was “banged up pretty good” and complaining of general pain, but was being released from the hospital this morning, Baylous said.
The incident happened at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday.
