I find it funny that the Republicans are trying to pin the Iraq disaster on President Obama. As Colin Powell advised George W. Bush in 2003, “You break it, you own it.”

To the person who complained about the care at the Huntington VA, Where did you get your info? Both my wife and myself receive care there, and the appointments are timely. We are seen on time. The pharmacy system is great, and the medical records are readily available if we are at any VA facility. What is left? I would hate to think that you got your info from FOX or some Republican member of Congress on CSPAN.

I have licenses, insurance, and pay taxes on four vehicles, a camping trailer, and a boat. I obey the traffic laws. I am also a cyclist. If you don’t like sharing the road with me, you have the option of taking the interstate. Incidentally, I’ve yet to see any traffic problems caused by cyclists, but by inconsiderate motorists that can’t share the road with others.

If people who are straight (i.e. heterosexual) ever had to worry about being fired from their jobs, kicked out of their rental properties, turned away from businesses, or denied the right to marry the person they love because of their sexual orientation, then there might be a need for a “Straight Pride” parade.

I try to bicycle to work whenever the weather is nice. I do it for my health and to save money. And like virtually all other bicyclists, I own a car and pay my share of taxes. I also try to be responsible and obey the rules of the road. If you hit me with your car, you might get a scratch. I, on the other hand, will likely end up in the hospital or the grave. So taking a few seconds to give bicyclists a few feet of passing space isn’t that big of a deal, is it?

A message to the Democratic candidates running for office in West Virginia: Be proud of being a democrat. You are not running against President Obama. He has a job. People are getting tired of all the negative comments about Obama, EPA, and coal. Coal has a future for a long time to come. West Virginia has the lowest sulfur coal in the world. Promote new ideas on how coal can be used and accepted as a clean source of energy. Man up, Democrats. This off-year election is yours to lose. Tennant and Casey have what it takes to win. Be proud, and make us proud.

I recently entered West Virginia on Interstate 64 from Ashland, Kentucky, and was really disappointed on the condition of the weeds growing between the east- and west- bound lanes of the interstate. Our previous governors seemed to care what visitors thought of our state, but it doesn’t seem Earl Ray cares. He should travel from Huntington to east of Hurricane and see the deplorable condition of the weeds. Very disappointing.

Somebody needs to tell Texas Gov. Rick Perry that those “smart guy” glasses aren’t fooling anybody.

Israel claims that Hamas has abducted three Israeli teens. Hamas denies that, and we don’t know for sure at this time what happened to the missing teens. What we do know is that since the teens went missing, Israel has openly abducted over 200 Palestinians.

A reader said liberals were out of touch with reality and could not be reasoned with. If so, that situation can be rectified. However, the average conservative is just not very bright, and that cannot be changed.

The killing of that young man by that trooper in Mercer county last Thursday night should make a good reason for an independent review board to review these cases of police brutality and harassment. I wonder why this was not printed on the opinion page “bearing arms in WV.”

Whether Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is guilty of any crime or military infraction is beside the point in the president obtaining his freedom. We leave no one behind, period. We traded five prisoners we probably couldn’t convict of any terrorism anyway, as most we hold in Gitmo are really in a legal limbo with no evidence to convict them of any acts of terrorism.

“From the beginning, most people on the left were against going into Iraq. I wasn’t... Liberals, you were right. We shouldn’t have.” — Glenn Beck, Tuesday, June 17, 2014.

Your June 19, 2014, editorial on Iraq’s current problems advocates a moral cop-out. The 2003 illegal invasion by the U.S.A.’s military destroyed Iraq’s government and its control of Iraqi territory. Under the principle of “You broke it, you own it, you fix it”, the U.S.A. has a moral obligation to the Iraqi people. Unfortunately, any new U.S.A. military adventurism in Iraq would probably make the situation worse. Perhaps the U.S.A. should show its remorse instead by putting on trial for war crimes the leaders, both civilian and military, who effectively demanded the 2003 invasion, and castigate their millions of virulently ‘patriotic’ civilian enablers who were all too ready to designate those opposed to that ill-fated military adventure as “un-American.”
