Former state senator Larry Rowe spent just $1,339 in the final days of the May primary election, before going on to top the ticket in the House 36th District Democratic primary, according to campaign disclosures filed with the secretary of state’s office.
Conversely, Delegate Mark Hunt, D-Kanawha, spent $8,432 of a total of $37,897 during the period, finishing fourth in the three-member district race.
During the reporting period, covering late April through most of May, Rowe reported raising $5,565 in contributions and spent $999 for campaign fliers purchased at My Campaign Store, along with $215 in postage.
Hunt raised $8,250 during the period. His key expenditure was $2,600 to hire 52 Election Day campaign workers, predominately from eastern Kanawha County, at $50 each. He also had a total of $2,090 in postage, and $1,250 for commercial airtime on WCHS-TV.
Among the other Democratic nominees in the 36th, Delegate Nancy Guthrie, D-Kanawha, raised $2,925 and spent $8,302. That included $6,976 to Rainmaker Media for mailers, and $1,326 to Control Point Group of Washington, D.C. for a “Get Out The Vote” phone bank.
Delegate Danny Wells reported $1,000 in contributions and $8,105 in expenditures, including a total of $3,914 to Patriotic Promotions of Charleston for mailers and advertising. Wells also spent $1,000 to hire 20 Election Day workers, at $50 each.
Among 36th District Republican nominees, Vaughn Sizemore raised $2,150 during the period and spent $4,938, primarily for radio spots on West Virginia Radio Corp. ($3,880) and Bristol Broadcasting ($870).
In the House 35th, among the Democratic nominees, newcomer Andrew Byrd raised $2,200 during the period and spent $1,300, all for airtime on Suddenlink cable; while perennial candidate Thornton Cooper raised $850, including $700 in contributions to himself, and spent $4,464. That included $1,945 for ads in Charleston Newspapers, and $1,567 for postcards and postage.
Among 37th District Republican nominees, Delegate Eric Nelson, R-Kanawha, raised $9,600 and spent $3,777, including $1,000 for Charleston Newspapers ads, and $1,537 to Design Makers of Charleston for signs.
Delegate J. B. McCuskey, R-Kanawha, raised $2,500 and spent $18,734, including $7,097 to Cold Spark Media of Pittsburgh for media design, advertising support and mailers.
Chris Stansbury raised $1,800 during the period and spent $17,746, including $9,512 to Mammoth Marketing Group of Austin, Texas, for mailers, $6,000 to New Strategies Consulting for consulting services, and $2,300 to WCHS-AM for commercial airtime.
Deadline to submit the post-primary reports was Monday, but several reports postmarked on that date have not yet been received and/or posted on the secretary of state’s website.
