Beckley man shot near Fayette County bar
A Beckley man was shot in the arm near a Fayette County bar early Saturday morning, deputies say.
Dennis Charles Brown, 20, was taken to Beckley Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said. He was shot at Drifter’s Bar & Grill in Glen Jean, even though the bar’s owner allegedly said there was no problem when deputies responded to the business earlier that morning on a tip that shots had been fired.
Deputies say they were unable to speak with Brown because of his injury, but the man who drove Brown to the hospital told them he and Brown were leaving the bar when he heard about eight shots. Brown then ran up to his car and asked for a ride to the hospital.
“Until we have a chance to speak with the victim to determine if he knows who shot him, we really don’t have a lot of information to work with,” Sheriff Steve Kessler said in a statement. “Incidents like this are not uncommon at Drifter’s, and the victims often refuse to cooperate with law enforcement.”
Kessler suggested that the bar’s management may have lied to deputies when they initially responded because the bar was forced to close for a week after a similar incident.
The Sheriff’s Department asks anyone with information about the incident to call the county 911 center at 304-574-3590 or submit information through the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.
