INSTITUTE, W.Va. — West Virginia State University’s baseball team has signed Winfield High shortstop Brandon Wright to a national letter of intent, the university announced Tuesday.

Wright, the General’s leadoff hitter, batted .444 this past season and stole 29 bases on his way to being a first team Class AAA All-State selection and the Daily Mail’s Kanawha Valley Player of the Year.

He earned honorable mention on the All-State team as a sophomore and a junior, batting .379 as a sophomore and .323 as a junior.

“We are happy to get a student-athlete like Brandon in our program,” said Yellow Jackets coach Sean Loyd. “He is an excellent student and has been one of the top players in our area the last couple of years.”
