Geneva Plumley Manning

On Sunday, July 6, 2014, our most cherished Geneva Johnson Plumley Manning of Oak Hill, formerly of Beckley, passed away at Bowers Hospice House. She was in her 88th year.

One of eight children, Geneva Hope Johnson was born Nov. 2, 1925, at Meadow Creek. She was the daughter of the late William Reece and Lula Gwinn Johnson. Her sister, Marjorie Bair, and brothers, Arthur, Raymond and Philip Johnson, have preceded her in death.

Geneva spent her childhood at Daniels. She was a graduate of Shady Spring High School, class of 1944. Geneva was married many years to Carlos O. Plumely Sr. To their union was born one son, Carlos Odell Plumley Jr. Geneva, Carlos and Odell made their home on Miller Street since 1948. The family worshiped at Memorial Baptist Church, where Geneva was the treasurer of the church for over 35 years. She was a member of the Disciples Sunday School Class and the Lydia Ormandy Bible Study.

Geneva worked in the printing industry for many years. She was affiliated with Biggs Johnson and Withrow for 23 years and retired as the office manager of Central Printing in 1990. Odell is married to Sue and they make their home in Oak Hill. Carlos O. Plumley Sr. died Aug. 31, 1999.

Geneva would eventually marry Robert Manning, and they made their home on Dry Hill Road.

In addition to Mr. Manning, Odell and Sue, those left to cherish Geneva's memory are her surviving sister and brothers, Elizabeth Thomas of Beckley, Charles Johnson of Daniels, Earl Johnson and his wife, Fern, of Hampton, Va., and her sisters-in-law, Flora Belle and Marjorie Johnson. Several nieces and nephews survive, as well as Robert Manning's children, Connie Swisher and her husband, Alan, of Gibsonville, N.C., Barbara Kelly and her husband, Charles, of Summerfield, N.C., and Robert F. Manning and his wife, Barbara, of Minnesota.

A service of remembrance honoring Geneva's life will be Wednesday, July 9, at 3 p.m. at Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley. Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating. Geneva will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour.
